Italian smokes runner netted

A 64-year-old Italian with links to organized crime in Naples has been arrested in Lagonissi, southeast of Athens, on suspicion of smuggling large quantities of contraband cigarettes. Following cooperation between Greek and Italian authorities, officers from the financial and drugs squads arrested Gennaro Camarota at the house where he had been living with his partner and three children for the last four years. Sources said that Camarota had evaded arrest in Italy and was wanted on suspicion of running a cigarette-smuggling ring that had links in various Balkan countries. He is alleged to have continued this activity from his base in Lagonissi. Police said that they found smuggled cigarettes at Camarota’s home. He has been remanded in custody at Korydalos Prison, where he will await extradition to Italy.
