Pirates seize Greek vessel

Somali pirates have seized a Greek-owned ship with 23 people on board in the Gulf of Aden, it was revealed yesterday. The Liberia-flagged vessel, named Eleni P. and managed by Eurobulk Ltd, was carrying iron from Ukraine to China via Singapore. Of those aboard the ship, two are Greeks, one is Romanian, one Ukrainian and the rest Filipinos, the company told Reuters. «We still can’t contact the ship but we believe it is sailing to Somalia,» said Eurobulk’s security officer Markos Vassilikos. «In our last communication, they said they were well.» A group of 10 pirates had boarded the vessel earlier in the day but Vassilikos did not reveal whether they had demanded a ransom. In January, another Greek-owned ship, the Maran Centaurus, seized as it was carrying 2 million barrels of crude oil to the US, was released after a ransom of 3.8 million euros was paid.
