Boy dies after hospital delays

A 4-year-old boy who suffered multiple injuries yesterday after being struck by an iron door that fell on him at his home in Xanthi, northern Greece, died a few hours later following a delay in his scheduled transfer to a better-equipped hospital in Thessaloniki. The boy was first taken to a hospital in Xanthi where doctors deemed he should be transferred to nearby Kavala for treatment. At the Kavala clinic, medics decided the boy should be taken to a Thessaloniki hospital. The toddler died from his injuries while awaiting the transfer. Regional health authorities ordered an urgent investigation to determine whether anyone should be held accountable for the tragic incident. The toddler’s death comes just two months after a 1-year-old boy with gastroenteritis died at Thessaloniki’s Ippokrateio following several weeks at three other hospitals where he reportedly received no medical attention.
