Suspects in Grigoropoulos death to be bailed on Sunday The two police officers being tried in connection to the fatal shooting of teenager Alexis Grigoropoulos in December 2008 are due to be released from custody on Sunday, June 6. The judge in the Amfissa court where the trial of Epaminondas Korkoneas and Vassilis Saraliotis is being held has ruled that the two suspects should be freed on bail because they have completed 18 months in custody. Both men have been barred from leaving the central Greek town and will have to report to the local police station every morning and evening until a verdict is delivered. They have been on trial (Korkoneas for shooting Grigoropoulos, Saraliotis for being an accomplice) since February but it is still not clear when the case will be wrapped up. ZEPHYRI SHOOTING Girl hit by bullet outside home An eight-year-old girl was admitted to a hospital in Athens on Saturday night after being struck in the head by a bullet. Police said the stepfather of the girl, a member of a Roma family living in Zefyri, western Athens, brought the child for treatment after she collapsed while playing outside her home. Doctors said she was hit on the left side of her head and was reported to be in stable condition after undergoing surgery. Police were yesterday looking into where the shot was fired from. Abusive father A 50-year-old Albanian man was arrested in Nikaia, near Piraeus, on Saturday on charges of sexually abusing his two daughters. The man is alleged to have systematically raped his daughters, now aged 15 and 16, for the past eight years and forcing his 10-year-old son to watch. The eldest of the two girls recently gave birth to a child believed to be the result of one of the rapes. Serial robbers Police in western Attica yesterday arrested four Roma men in connection to a string of burglaries in the area. The suspects allegedly targetted people who left their homes to shop in nearby street markets. Police found loot worth 350,000 euros in their possession and believe the four men to be responsible for 55 robberies in western Attica. Rape suspect A 24-year-old German man has been arrested in Hania, Crete, on suspicion of attempting to rape a 21-year-old woman in the toilet of a bar. Police said that the incident was reported at about 4 a.m. yesterday and the suspect was taken into custody after the woman pointed him out to police. Community leader Chris Mourikis, the Greek-Australian journalist, co-owner of the Neos Kosmos community newspaper and president of the Greek community of Melbourne, died yesterday at age 77 after a prolonged battle with cancer. Taverna takeout A taverna on the highway between the Corinth Canal and Epidaurus was robbed by two armed men, aged approximately 25, who barged into the eatery brandishing guns late on Saturday night. The men, who had their faces covered and were wearing gloves, fired a warning shot in the air and made off with 400 euros from the taverna’s cash register.
