Gun found in boy’s satchel

Police in western Attica yesterday were questioning a 26-year-old Roma man in connection with the shooting of an 8-year-old girl in Zefyri, western Athens, after discovering a gun in the schoolbag of the man’s 5-year-old son. Officers were called to the boy’s school on Monday after the head of the kindergarten attended by the boy noticed him struggling to carry his bag. On inspecting the bag, the kindergarten director discovered a starter pistol and dozens of rounds of ammunition. According to sources, the boy told police that his father owned a different gun which he had hidden in the family’s garden last Friday, the day that the 8-year-old girl was hospitalized after being struck in the head by a bullet. The girl’s stepfather, also a member of the local Roma community, took her to the hospital on Friday after she collapsed while playing outside her home. Doctors said she was in a stable condition after undergoing surgery.
