An Iranian refugee with his mouth sewn shut is seen through a hole in a banner yesterday outside the Athens offices United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). He and a compatriot went on hunger strike on July 28 after their asylum applications were rejected. Giorgos Tsarbopoulos, head of the Athens UNHCR office, said the refugees’ despair ‘stems from the enduring problems of the asylum system.’ He said the UN refugee agency would resume its role in assessing asylum applications if the government re-establishes appeal committees.
