Blazes started by firefighter

Fire service officials are investigating the bizarre case of a volunteer firefighter on Corfu who confessed yesterday to being responsible for setting at least 11 fires on the northern Ionian island. According to official sources, the 38-year-old unnamed man admitted to igniting a string of blazes over the course of the month as well as two fires that broke out on the island on Sunday, with the intention of putting them out so he could show off his skills. Arson investigators became suspicious of the man after noticing that he had called in all 11 fires and was always at the site of the blaze when firefighters arrived. «He would literally throw himself at the flames and display incredible zeal in his firefighting duties,» said one officer. In his confession, the 38-year-old volunteer said he was hoping to be hired on a permanent basis by the fire service. He was released following his deposition. His trial date has been set for February 2011.
