A brief tour of the area

The report recommending that 51 buildings in the Athens district of Metaxourgeio be listed for preservation is like a brief tour round the architecture of the early 20th century. The houses in the photographs are typical of the period. 22 Sfaktirias A single-story house with simple features, built around 1920. The entrance is reached via an uncovered passage at the side of the house and through a wooden door surrounded by an architrave. The wooden German-style windows have narrow eaves. 48 Salaminos A one-story worker’s residence of a very simple style, dating from 1930, with a side entrance, inner courtyard, and wooden French-style window frames. It had a wooden roof which has been replaced with asbestos. Salaminos & Sfaktirias These two semi-detached single-story buildings, comprising a residence and a former store, date to 1900. There is a small, uncovered passageway and an internal courtyard. The store on the corner has a basement accessible by an inner staircase that abuts the sidewalk. Three wooden double doors, one on each facade, have panels and panes of glass. Above them are fanlights with eaves and decorative bands. The second building, not visible in the photograph, is built on a higher level and has an upper room and a side entry. Both buildings are in poor condition.
