Protection for Kuneva pulled

Lawyers representing Constantina Kuneva, the 44-year-old Bulgarian general secretary of Athens’s association of cleaners and domestic staff attacked in December 2008 by assailants who threw acid in her face, yesterday condemned a decision by the Citizens’ Protection Ministry to withdraw her security detail. The attorneys also accused the ministry of having provided inadequate protection to the 46-year-old woman, who was blinded in one eye and suffered extensive damage to her vocal chords as a result of the attack. «Instead of escorting her on the few outings she went on, the guards would watch over the house, as these were the orders they were given,» the lawyers said in a statement. Her lawyers demanded that prosecutors reopen the case against an Albanian man suspected to have been behind the attack, which was recently shelved for reasons that remain unclear. The attack is thought to have been connected to Kuneva’s unionist activities.
