Coast guard officers observe computer screens yesterday at a new operation center in Piraeus set up by Frontex, the European Union’s external border-monitoring agency. The new regional center is to oversee border surveillance in Greece, Italy, Malta and Cyprus. Frontex Director Ilkka Laitinen, who attended the inauguration ceremony for the center, said the vast majority, 90 percent, of illegal immigrants who are caught attempting to enter the EU are stopped at Greek borders.
