Firefighters were protesting…

A contract firefighter wearing an oxygen mask walks past a row of mock coffins as riot police look on during a protest in front of Parliament in central Athens yesterday. The firefighters were protesting the fact that they have not received some of their supplementary pay yet. They were also complaining about the government’s decision to shorten their fixed-term contracts from eight months to seven. Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, which consisted of several hundred protesters.
