Call for add-on date extension

Civil engineers yesterday added their voices to those who are demanding that the government extend the December 28 deadline for homeowners to declare areas of properties which were originally planned as balconies, garages or basements but have since been turned into living space, known as «imiypaithrioi» (semi-open) in Greek. The Association of Civil Engineers (SPME) was the latest organization, after the Technical Chamber of Greece, to call on the government to allow more time for homeowners to declare the areas in question and exempt them from any future penalties. Both groups have made their requests as long queues of applicants have been building up each day at town-planning offices, which will operate under the auspices of municipalities from January 1. «It is shameful that citizens have these kind of dealings with public services,» said SPME president Nikos Zygouris, who suggested that homeowners be summoned in alphabetical order.
