Woman charged with murder, desecration

A Cretan prostitute was charged yesterday with murdering and dismembering her lover before burying him in her garden. Marianna Souvari, 48, allegedly shot Aristidis Kourebis, 38, three times following an argument in the early hours of Saturday in her ground-floor apartment in Hania, western Crete. Police say she then used a saw to cut off his legs at the thigh, and tried, unsuccessfully, to remove his head. Souvari, who worked as a prostitute on Rhodes, buried Kourebis in a shallow grave in her garden, and made for the village of Fre, where she was arrested later on Saturday. Souvari was charged with murder, desecration of the body and illegal arms possession. She told officers she had been drunk at the time of the murder, and that Kourebis had routinely abused her.
