Fighting students force college closure

A major Athens technical college was temporarily shut down yesterday following violent clashes between student members of the Communist Party and a coalition of extreme left-wingers and anarchists seeking revenge for a confrontation during a peace march last week. In an emergency meeting, the Athens Technological Education Institute (TEI) governing board decided to close the faculties in Aegaleo, western Athens, today and tomorrow in the hope that tempers will cool down. Yesterday morning, dozens of leftists and anarchists wearing crash helmets and wielding sticks and metal bars burst into the main TEI building and fought with members of the Communist Youth (KNE). One student was hospitalized and in serious condition, while dozens were slightly injured. KNE members had fought with anarchists and leftists during a central Athens peace march on Thursday.
