Waiter arrested for rival’s cleaver murder

A Jordanian waiter has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a middle-aged man whose decapitated, butchered body was found in two plastic bags near a beach in southern Attica in early July, police said yesterday. Detectives said Wassif Marije, 38, a Palestinian with a Jordanian passport, confessed to killing Alexandros Petsis, 52, on April 26 in the central Athens flat of a nightclub singer and friend of Marije’s with whom the victim had a relationship. Marije is understood to have been in love with Panayiota Kontonika, who at the time of the murder was working in the provinces, having granted Petsis, a married father of two, the use of her Exarchia apartment. Marije allegedly killed Petsis with a cleaver and cut up the corpse which he dumped off the coastal highway at Saronida. Yesterday, Marije led police to the spot, 20 kilometers further south, where he had disposed of Petsis’s head.
