A Thessaloniki Internet cafe owner yesterday abseiled down the city’s 32-meter-high White Tower to protest against a new law banning the use of electronic games in public places. Alexis Alexiadis, who is also a mountain climber, descended halfway down the 15th-century Turkish landmark, where he hovered for some time holding a banner reading ‘No to censorship on the Internet.’ Two Thessaloniki Internet cafe owners were arrested last month for allegedly violating the law, which was drafted earlier this year to fight widespread gambling on illegal slot machines.
