A makeshift wall of wooden frames and sandbags blocks a railway bridge over the flood-prone Kifissos River in southern Athens yesterday, as workers erected barriers in fear of further flooding. The State said it would give 8.8 million euros in compensation and interest-free loans to businesses that suffered flood damage last month. The Court of First Instance ruled that the law, passed at the end of May, contravened constitutional provisions on the free movement of ideas. Yiannis Kyfonidis, Christos Iordanidis and Vangelis Alatzoglou had faced jail terms of one to 12 months and fines of 5,000 to 75,000 euros.
