‘Take war on terror to end’

Opposition leader Costas Karamanlis said yesterday that his New Democracy party demanded the «definitive destruction of the phenomenon» of terrorism and would keep pressing the government to that end. At a nationally televised news conference in Thessaloniki, where he was attending the International Trade Fair, he said: «For us, terrorism will have been wiped out when the perpetrators, their accomplices, their sponsors, all those who are caught up in this issue, are known and have been punished in an exemplary fashion. That is why we support the job being done and we are pressuring the government to take it all the way.» Commenting on the fact that some conservative party members have suggested a cover-up with the assistance of the ruling PASOK party, Karamanlis said: «We do not cast aspersions on any political party. And we do not accept being made to feel guilty about questions that are asked.» Meanwhile, the Supreme Court prosecutor, Evangelos Kroustallakis, responded yesterday to claims by Savvas Xeros that he had been given an unspecified drug that caused him to feel fear while he was being treated at Evangelismos Hospital. Xeros’s confessions set off a chain of arrests that destroyed the hitherto impenetrable gang.
