EDA ELECTED: A three-member delegation of the United Democratic Left (EDA), led by Mr. Michalis Kyrkos, yesterday visited Interior Minister Giorgios Athanassiadis-Novas and asked for the release of imprisoned and exiled communists who have been elected to Parliament. The committee asked the minister to cancel the trial by court martial of some communists since the court martials are to be abolished. (…) Mr. Novas assured the committee that he would present their demands to the government, which was the only authority able to decide on such a serious issue. The ministry’s legal adviser, to whom the memorandum was given, told Mr. Novas privately that EDA’s claims had no foundation. PHANTOM GANG: According to an Interior Ministry announcement, made after an investigation by Brigadier Mandouvalos, Colonel Harakonitis has been relieved of the command of the Tripolis gendarmerie after he was held responsible for spreading a report, subsequently denied, that a bandit gang had appeared in Arcadia. Captain Kostopoulos, who is, however, heading a detachment in pursuit of this gang in the mountains around Megalopolis, was also relieved of his command of the Megalopolis gendarmerie. The interior minister claims that the prosecution is focusing on Eteocleos Damoulakis, the former head of a bandit gang on Mt. Mainalon, believed to be acting on his own.
