Talk show lawyers face music

Six lawyers are being called to order by the bar association for allegedly bringing their profession into disrepute on TV news bulletins and discussions concerning the November 17 terrorist gang. The six are to appear before the Athens Bar Association’s disciplinary council on Wednesday. According to sources, one of the charges states that the lawyers either presented themselves as experts on terrorism or claimed to be in possession of information on the suspects in order to further their own careers. The Bar Association views these actions as an insult to the dignity of the legal profession. Ioannis Stamoulis, Alexandros Karamanolis, K. Kourkoulos and D. Tentolouris are to explain their media appearances, while Pericles Stavrianakis and F. Asimakis are to face charges of improper behavior and self-promotion. The last two already face disciplinary action. The same sources say another lawyer might be asked to reply to similar charges regarding media appearances. The arrests of suspected November 17 suspects since July have led to a frenzy of claims and counterclaims by TV hosts and their guests.
