Son kills, mutilates, eats father

A 31-year-old man with a history of psychiatric problems allegedly stabbed his 75-year-old father to death in their home in Ambelokipi, central Athens, early yesterday and then dismembered and ate parts of the body. Vassilis Polemis, then called police and, without giving his name, said he had killed the devil and gave his address. When police arrived they had to break into the apartment as Polemis refused to open the door. According to the coroner, Polemis had stabbed his father, Stamatis, four times in the neck with a knife and hacked the body to pieces. He then allegedly ate some body parts. Polemis was brought before the public prosecutor, barefoot and in bloodstained clothing, and charged with murder, illegal use of a weapon and desecration of a body. Neighbors said that despite the son’s history of mental illness, his father had not wanted to commit him to a psychiatric hospital and kept him locked in their apartment. The two often argued. Polemis’s condition had worsened since the death of his mother, they said. Speaking on SKAI radio, he said Gerakis must prove he had no relations with New Democracy MPs when they gave advance announcement of his actions.
