Widow burns herself on husband’s grave

Unable to overcome her recent bereavement, an elderly widow set herself on fire on her husband’s grave last week, suffering fatal injuries, police in northern Greece said yesterday. Angeliki Antoniou, 74, a childless pensioner from the eastern Macedonian town of Drama, had reportedly fallen into deep depression after the death two months ago of her 75-year-old husband, to whom she had been married for some 50 years. On Tuesday, Antoniou visited his grave in the Drama cemetery, taking a can of petrol with her – which she poured over herself and set alight. Bystanders who rushed to the woman’s aid put out the flames and called an ambulance that took her to the Drama hospital and from there to Thessaloniki’s Papanikolaou Hospital, which has a specialized burns unit. She died on Friday.
