Wildfires ravage Greece amid high winds

Three wildfires are currently active amidst strong winds and high danger in Attica, Crete and the Peloponnese.

In Aspropyrgos, western Attica, a fire ignited Tuesday morning in remote brushland. Thirty-four firefighters, two foot teams and ten vehicles are on site, with support from helicopter operations.

In Rethymno, Crete, a fire reignited in the Agios Vasileios Municipality, where it had been brought under control after overnight efforts. The fire that broke out further north in the Three Monasteries area, triggering a 112 emergency alert for potential evacuations, is now under control. Further south, firefighting efforts are ongoing in Akoumia village and the Eligia Gorge, where fires have also flared up.

In Laconia, southern Peloponnese, firefighters are battling a fire north of Megali Spilia village with 43 firefighters, one ground team and 13 vehicles, aided by water drops from three aircraft and one helicopter.
