Age of contrasts

If anyone was to try to record and compare even a few aspects of the era we live in, what conclusions would they draw? Yes, it is a time full of peculiarities, dilemmas and contrasts. Though most things now function automatically thanks to «progress,» the view still prevails that man is the center of the universe. The work force may be gradually dwindling due to cost-cutting but there is still great concern about overwork and unemployment. On the one hand, there is an outcry over the toxic substances in our food, and on the other, there are a myriad of suggestions on how to live longer. And although we show no lack of compassion for the poor, we hardly ever really get up in arms over the countless human beings dying from starvation or sickness around the world. Then there are the attempts to «protect» our planet – polluted daily by all kinds of waste, illegal construction and processing. And while our news programs consist almost entirely of awful incidents that anger and upset us, we are constantly reminded of the beneficial effects on our health of euphoria and laughter. Society trumpets the valuable contribution of the family to the preservation and cohesion of every civilized society, while lies and immorality erode its very foundations. Civilized society struggles for the rights of the young but is unable to limit the widespread exploitation of millions of children all over the world. And all the while, a sense of pride prevails in the progress we have made…
