No blood for oil

K.I. Angelopoulos’s commentary, «Beyond the ‘no to war’» (Jan. 30, 2003), contains a number of inaccuracies. The major one is his assertion that the US is «staging a showdown with Iraq» in order to take control of the Gulf region’s oil resources. On September 11, 2001 I watched the first plane fly into the World Trade Center. That was a very strong experience for me and many other people. The US is on the verge of a battle in Iraq because we do not want that to happen again. One could debate whether this is the best way to achieve that goal. Only time will tell. But Mr Angelopoulos’s take on this situation is off the mark. Perhaps he should truly read the world news as he claims he does… before jumping to inaccuracies in his commentary like, «The world’s media focus on the fact that Berlin and Paris and other EU member states oppose Washington’s impatience to go to war.»
