ND shows character

Over the past few months, New Democracy, Greece?s main conservative opposition party, has backed some of the bills that were tabled in Parliament as a result of the loan agreement signed between the Socialist administration, the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

That was not always easy for the party led by Antonis Samaras, who has often come under pressure from the country?s union groups as well as New Democracy officials.

On the other hand, it is extremely important at this moment that ND has the courage to throw its weight behind some of the reforms which have been on the back burner for years — something that both mainstream parties are responsible for.

New Democracy has shown a mature stance — and it must continue to do so, also with regard to the government?s campaign to liberalize closed-shop professions.

At the end of the day, opening up these trades has always been on the conservatives? agenda — only to be sacrificed on the altar of political cost.
