The worst is yet to come
The nation is at a critical turning point. The recession is having an impact on a growing section of society, the government is trying to curb the resistance from vested interests (which have grown in power thanks to previous PASOK administrations), and banks and private corporations have been hit by the downturn.
All this has created a grim climate as violence – manifested in many different forms – is an increasingly frequent phenomenon.
The bitter truth is that things will get better only after they get worse. Recovery will have to come about through a number of painful, albeit necessary reforms.
The coming weeks will not be easy. If the ruling Socialists show signs of fear or compromise in the face of protests, they will most probably fail.
We should not fool ourselves: Even if this administration were to fall and be succeeded by a new one, the path ahead of us would still remain the same.
