Violence?s slippery slope

Everything that occurred both on the field and behind the scenes at Olympiakos?s Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium on Saturday evening, during and after the derby match against Panathinaikos, was completely unacceptable.

The owners and officials that represent the two clubs bear a huge responsibility for events turning out this way. Officials of most Greek soccer clubs have a tendency to use inflammatory language when they speak publicly and seek to exploit their teams? hardcore supporters as if they are their own private armies.

These people seem oblivious to the dangers that are caused by their irresponsible behavior.

As far as the state is concerned, it has a duty to assume its responsibilities and ensure that soccer in Greece does not continue on violence?s slippery slope.

If the state fails to take decisive action, it will not be long before we are mourning victims that lost their lives for the sake of the sport?s extreme fanatics.
