Beware dangerous illusions
How lovely it would be if there were a magical way to simultaneously solve the huge problem of Greece?s debt and also of the deficit that makes it depend so entirely on borrowed money.
We all feel the despair of the escalating numbers of the unemployed, of the pensioners on the lowest scale and of the people living on the poverty line, not to mention those below it.
The thing is, however, that the choice is between difficult solutions and destructive solutions.
The populist forces in this country, either due to self-interest or ideological obsession, insist on promoting the idea of a unilateral cancellation of the debt and that Greece can survive without another memorandum. And yes, it can, but only in a state of poverty and beggary, with its public servants and pensioners out on the street.
Unfortunately, there are no easy choices right now and no one has the right to cultivate illusions in a nation that is already at the end of its tether.
