Shameful events on Corfu

The events that unfolded on Wednesday night in Corfu Town are completely unacceptable.

How can we tolerate the attack on Euro MPs, who were in Greece attending a seminar that was addressing ways of tackling illegal immigration and who obviously want to hear about ways they can help Greeks, by an angry mob and then having to be whisked away from the island by the coast guard?

It is difficult to believe that anyone has failed to understand that Greece cannot afford to make any more enemies and needs as many friends and allies as it can get. This kind of behavior further entrenches the stereotype that is being systematically reinforced by certain people who argue that Greece has no place in the European family.

All political party leaders need to take such events seriously and to publicly take a stand against them, making it clear that they will not tolerate behavior that makes this kind of barbarism look cool, and especially not when the entire nation?s reputation is at stake.
