Don?t destroy our last lifeline

Tourism, which is this main driver of the country?s main, is currently in danger of being dealt a major blow.

A series of blockades at ports and airports around Greece by taxi drivers has resulted in serious problems for the foreign visitors who have decided to come here despite the recent bad press, and has painted yet another negative picture of the country on an international level.

There is growing fear that those working in the coastal shipping sector are going to follow suit, given that their unions are preparing to launch a fresh round of strikes at the very height of the tourist season.

At this point in time, the tourism industry is giving Greece?s ailing economy the kiss of life. It is also providing employment and wages to thousands who would otherwise find themselves among the ranks of the unemployed.

To all those who are planning this kind of action, the message is: Think again. They should realize that society, in its overwhelming majority, stands against this kind of approach.
