OPINION

A laudable example to follow

The decision reached by the Hellenic Seamen?s Union (PNO) not to proceed with strike action this weekend is one which shows a great deal of responsibility.

The local tourism sector has already been hit hard by extensive industrial action comprising strikes and multiple blockades.

The fact that there are still union groups in Greece which are able to perceive and clearly evaluate the particularly crucial situation in which the country is currently immersed, comes as very positive news indeed.

They are the ones who do not wish to deprive Greece of the kind of invaluable revenue that foreign visitors bring into the country during the high season.

One can only hope that more sectors of the local economy, especially those which have already painted a particularly negative picture of the country beyond its borders — not to mention of themselves — will eventually come round and start following in the footsteps of the considerate employees of the coastal shipping sector.
