Keeping the nation alive

Greeks are hurt and frustrated. Many of the things they took for granted are being torn apart. Many are naturally attracted to populist politicians who are preaching ?resistance? to the country?s EU peers and foreign lenders.

Too bad there are few convincing counterarguments. The government has squandered most of its credibility. The system that led us to bankruptcy is still there. The opposition is pouring oil on the flames that it may have to extinguish in the future. The media are replete with populism and cheap patriotism.

But all that was to be expected. At the end of the day, Greece must make sure it remains a part of the EU family. It will take a lot of courage and determination from society?s healthy forces to push the country forward. Amid the vulgarity, the violence and the irrationality, there are politicians, academics, teachers, businessmen and young people who are struggling to keep this nation alive. Let?s hope something will be left to build on.
