Failure to manage EU funds

It?s really infuriating: Greece?s economy has stagnated, and the smallest investment can make a tangible change. Nevertheless, billions of euros in European Union structural funds remain unused thanks to the foot-dragging and incompetence of the country?s political officials — both on a central and local administration level.

Regrettably, the explanation for the failure is very simple. Instead of being invested in development projects around the country, European funds have in the past instead often ended up in the pockets of all sorts of aides and middlemen.

Politicians, the majority of administrative staff and mayors either never tackled the issue in a responsible manner or they were blatantly incompetent and unqualified for allocating European funds.

We must finally realize that unless we get better politicians in the central government and the country?s municipalities and unless we succeed in building a more efficient state apparatus, this country will never manage to stand on its feet.
