OPINION

It?s just nasty work after all

The unity government represents a unique opportunity for political parties, and especially for PASOK and New Democracy, as there are difficult decisions to be taken and implemented within the next few months in order for Greece to enter the safe zone.

Whoever wants to win the next elections must see that they have everything to gain if all the unpleasantness of austerity and reform is taken care of beforehand, by someone else.

However, this will require the government of Lucas Papademos to iron out of Cabinet problems like poor communication, inaction and fear of political cost. Ministers afraid of taking unpleasant decisions or whose personal ambition comes first, need not participate. A streamlined government with decisive members can save Greece if it has to. Those who want to undermine the government, should consider the responsibility of getting Greece kicked out of the eurozone.
