OPINION

A nation over a barrel

Athens and its eurozone partners are playing a very dangerous game as the threat of a Greek default looms ever larger.

This is a war about the country?s economic survival and its future in the euro area and thus means that Prime Minister Lucas Papademos must take the responsibility to lift any final obstacles to the disbursement of the second bailout package. Our political parties have no time to waste on public relations stunts.

PASOK leader George Papandreou and New Democracy chief Antonis Samaras shouldered the burden and the political cost during the Parliament vote on Sunday. Now, they must join forces with the premier and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos to finalize the deal and get started on the implementation of the mammoth obligations without any further delay.

For their part, our partners in the eurozone must finally realize that pressure must not reach the point of humiliation. Such tactics are neither justified nor effective.
