OPINION

The only path is in the EU

Greece is running headlong toward disaster, and if a national unity government is not formed within the next few days, a second round at the polls will become inevitable.

It is clear that the pro-Europe and pro-eurozone forces are battling against the odds. PASOK has been strategically beaten and has fallen foul of public opinion.

New Democracy has also failed to inspire confidence, shrinking the center-right in the process.

The handful of centrist liberals, meanwhile, are squandering their energy on petty squabbles and appear unable to form a reliable strong core.

Given these dynamics, elections in June and a victory for SYRIZA and the anti-memorandum block seem almost certain.

The present is no time for egos and personal strategies. Anyone with a share of the responsibility for the current situation should speak up now and try to rally the pro-Europe forces, because those who remain silent will be held accountable by history.
