Stop the spiral of violence

The events that took place in Rafina and Halkidiki over the last few days are particularly alarming. Extreme right-wing and left-wing hit squads decided to take the law into their own hands and impose it as they saw fit. The indescribable incidents of violence demonstrate how dangerous the situation has become following years of governments failing to uphold law and order, a result of the cowardice and incompetence of the politicians who were in charge.

So now right-wing hits squads think they can conduct checks to determine who is a legal immigrant or not, while their left-wing counterparts believe they can stop any kind of legal investment because they so please.

In the end, the one extreme followed the other: The out-of-control lawlessness of one group of hooligans triggered the reaction of another, and now the country is going down a spiral of violence.

While Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias reacted rightly and swiftly, it will take even greater resolution to put an end to this deadly downhill course.
