Making pariahs of the hooligans

Once more the force of a peaceful mass protest rally has been overshadowed by the violence of a small group of ?usual suspects? who carried out their planned disruptive action Wednesday as they do at nearly every demonstration. These champions of violence and hooliganism do a great deal of harm to the country, the worst of which is that they rob ordinary people of the right to air their discontent and to march peacefully to express disapproval of the government or any other issue.

These troublemakers also allow some of the foreign media to spin the scenes of destruction into shallow and frivolous portrayals of Greece that have little to do with the day-to-day reality.

The police do their job when faced with such actions and they does it well. But it is also up to political parties, and especially those on the left, to condemn these agitators in no uncertain terms and to make pariahs out of them.

There is nothing to gain from such violence, especially for those who simply want to earn an honest living.
