OPINION

Let’s not botch it up

The tourism sector is Greece’s heavy industry. Predictions for the summer season are quite optimistic and strengthen the belief that autumn will see the first signs of an economic recovery.

That said, we must do everything in our power to protect this sector during the tourism season, which begins just a few weeks from now. We should try to limit the number of strikes and protest rallies that have marred the experiences of so many holidaymakers here in the past.

Acts such as closing off access to the capital’s historical center and the popular archaeological sites deal a severe blow to the country’s real economy as well as ordinary people who are thirsty for jobs and stability.

Political parties across the ideological spectrum must agree on a moratorium during the tourism season. Our democracy can and should be able to function without undermining our own existence at such as crucial time for the future of this nation.
