Greece needs to step up security

Terrorism continues to pose a major threat, as the tragic events in the United States have illustrated in the harshest manner. But the bombing of the Boston Marathon has other lessons to teach us here in Greece, and that is how the placement of security cameras on major thoroughfares and other parts of America’s cities allowed the authorities to identify the suspects quickly and close in on them.

A number of governments in Greece have tried to introduce legislation to allow for the more widespread use of this security measure, which has proven to be an effective tool in tracking down criminals and solving crimes in many parts of the world. However, their plans have always come up against a powerful lobby that resists the idea and that has managed to scupper it at every attempt. But surely it is time for Greece to catch up with other countries in the fight against crime and terror.
