Tackling youth unemployment the right way

Unemployment among young people is a huge problem that must be addressed with drastic measures. Recent figures show that it is not exclusively a Greek problem, but one that has grown to extremely worrying dimensions in many other parts to Europe as well.

Many analysts and commentators have voiced concern that youth unemployment may pose a threat to social cohesion and lead to unrest.

The European Union is frantically searching for solutions, as is the government in Greece, where the problem is especially acute. That said, the ruling parties need to be very careful about how they deal with the issue because any hint that they are using EU funding meant to fight youth joblessness to prop up their cronies again would be a very grave mistake. Any suspicion that money is not going where it ought to at this point would create more public anger.
