No more power games

It’s high time Greece’s islands were hooked up to the national power grid via underwater cables. We have to proceed with this project immediately.

Special interests are using various unorthodox methods to stand in the way of this scheme. It is time for the government and the state as a whole to ignore these reactionaries and waste no more time in moving ahead with the laying of underwater cables.

The recent electricity cut on Santorini, which was caused by a fire at the island’s power station and led to a total blackout as well as several smaller power outages, was rather embarrassing for the country.

The difficulties on Santorini also emphasized just how important it is to find a way to ensure that our islands, so vital to tourism, our economy’s largest revenue-earner, have a stable and secure connection to the country’s electricity network.
