Blanket criticism

It goes without saying that the Greek Police (ELAS) cannot have ties with criminal organizations of any type.

Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias has handled recent allegations regarding possible links between the force and members of the far-right Golden Dawn party in a courageous and firm manner. Greek authorities must remove any suspicion of illegal connections between ELAS and non-institutional power centers.

That said, the country’s media, its politicians and the public should avoid blanket generalizations and slandering the Greek Police in its entirety.

Critics should not make sweeping statements on the basis of isolated incidents attributed to Golden Dawn supporters or the party’s politicians.

The police have carried out a series of difficult tasks related to security and public order as well as the fight against domestic terrorism despite the fact that officials have had to work under adverse conditions and with low wages.
