The true face of Golden Dawn
The vulgar and bullish behavior that we have seen in the past few days from members of the extreme-right Golden Dawn party does not in any way represent the Greek people or the nation.
No degree of indignation with the system or destitution justifies the kind of vulgarity and the violence that citizens are subjected to watch on their television screens every day.
There is absolutely nothing patriotic about this kind of behavior, whatever the people exercising it may say.
We can only hope that those citizens who have been sucked in by Golden Dawn’s ugly brand of extreme populism have now seen through the facade and are able to discern the party’s true face and beliefs.
On the other hand, we must not absolve of responsibility those who went on and on, describing the government as being akin to an occupation force, riling up people’s fanaticism and stirring dangerous reactions.
