Scare tactics

The standard policy adopted by the leadership of the country’s main leftist opposition party SYRIZA vis a vis anyone displaying an interest in investing in Greece is to threaten them with a loss of investment, especially in the case of state property privatizations.

The most recent example of this strategy is a fresh threat launched yesterday by SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras in view of the procedure regarding the sale of the Public Power Corporation’s power grid.

As he often does, Tsipras challenged the assumption that the commitments the state makes now should continue to hold even if the government changes.

This tactic goes beyond standard opposition practices as it systematically undermines all efforts to attract investment and allow the country to enter a period of much desired growth – unless the SYRIZA chief has discovered novel ways to raise revenues, which is most unlikely.
