Shameful strikes

If the eight universities around Greece that have been on strike for the past two months persist with their action, as they said they would on Wednesday, it is more than likely that the students at those institutions will miss out on the entire semester.

This is nothing less than shameful.

What we are basically seeing is a situation whereby students are missing out on vital education while the administrative staff at those eight universities are busy striking while receiving full pay at the same time – pay that comes out of Greek taxpayers’ pockets.

What is worse is that this kind of abuse of position is happening at a time when Greek families already crippled by the crisis are having to make huge sacrifices to ensure that their children get an education and get out into the job market as soon as possible.

The onus lies with the rectors of the universities and the unions supporting the actions, and it is a heavy onus indeed.
