Battling tax evasion

Prosecutors, independent authorities and conscientious Finance Ministry employees have been doing a good job in terms of curtailing tax evasion for a while now.

It took a long time for the system to start operating, but it is now beginning to bear fruit based on legislation which has been approved by the Greek Parliament over the last few years.

Of course the aim in this case should be to fetch as much money as possible into the state coffers, along with establishing the kind of culture that deters citizens from committing such offenses.

Those who are doing their jobs properly should receive every possible form of assistance and be shielded against any kind of political intervention.

It is equally important that those people and the institutions they represent keep away from partisan games and publicity stunts.
