Success and sacrifice
The long, tough negotiations conducted with the country’s international partners and lenders were brought to a positive conclusion on Tuesday.
Thankfully, there will be no new fiscal measures and the emphasis will now be placed on a series of structural reforms.
Greece went to great pains to make the adjustments agreed to with its creditors and that is precisely why the government was able to negotiate with the troika envoys.
Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and his financial team may be the ones taking credit for the success at the negotiating table, but no one should forget that this accomplishment was mainly due to the painstaking efforts of Greek citizens and taxpayers.
What is of prime importance in this case is that the country’s primary surplus – in other words the sacrifices made by taxpayers – be distributed among those truly in need as well as go toward actions that will enhance growth.
