The enemies of progress

There are some Greeks who don’t want to see anything change. They would rather see Piraeus port remain hostage to the whims of unions and officials who have grown accustomed to feeding off the state than a dynamic hub that generates jobs and revenues for the Greek people.

They don’t mind the sight of the facilities built for the 2004 Olympic Games rusting away and turned into rubbish dumps. They can’t see that developing these valuable pieces of property will bring multiple benefits.

These are the people who have fought every big investment and every big infrastructure project. But the worst thing about them is that they have nothing else to bring to the table, no counterproposals about how Greece can get out of the mess it’s in.

The Chinese investment at Piraeus is the best proof of Greece’s capabilities and had we listened to the chorus of naysayers it never would have happened.
